Two Killed, 15 Injured in Van-Elephant Collision

A van carrying 16 relatives collided with a wild elephant attempting to cross the main road in the Bandanagala area early on June 1, 2026. The accident, which occurred around 1:00 AM, claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman from Dehiattakandiya. Fifteen other individuals sustained injuries and were admitted to Dehiattakandiya and Polonnaruwa hospitals. The group was returning home after a pilgrimage to Polonnaruwa. Siripura Police are investigating the incident.

New reports indicate that two people have died in the van-elephant collision, not one woman as previously reported. The deceased include a 61-year-old woman and an unidentified man. A total of 16 individuals were injured and admitted to Dehiattakandiya and Polonnaruwa hospitals. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM on the Mahiyangana-Dimbulagala main road near Badunagala, as the victims were returning from a pilgrimage.
