A van carrying 16 relatives collided with a wild elephant attempting to cross the main road in the Bandanagala area early on June 1, 2026. The accident, which occurred around 1:00 AM, claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman from Dehiattakandiya. Fifteen other individuals sustained injuries and were admitted to Dehiattakandiya and Polonnaruwa hospitals. The group was returning home after a pilgrimage to Polonnaruwa. Siripura Police are investigating the incident.
