Wimal Weerawansa Summoned by CCIB Over Contempt of Court Allegations

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has been summoned to appear before the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) on Friday, September 30, 2026, to provide a statement. The summons is in connection with an investigation into allegations that remarks he made during a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) rally in Anuradhapura on September 12 constituted contempt of court. These comments reportedly pertained to the remanding of Namal Rajapaksa. Following a complaint to the Inspector General of Police, facts were presented to Colombo Magistrate's Court No. 01, which ordered the retrieval of unedited footage of the speech, which police have since obtained.
