Wimal Weerawansa Faces Judicial Scrutiny on Two Fronts

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court has ordered an investigation into a statement made by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa at a public rally on September 12th, which allegedly constitutes contempt of court. The probe, directed at the Inspector General of Police, will examine remarks made criticising a court order concerning Namal Rajapaksa's case, with a CD of the statement submitted as evidence. Separately, a case filed against Weerawansa and five others for obstructing public roads near the UN office in 2016 was adjourned for further examination of evidence. The adjournment was due to the absence of witnesses in the earlier case, while Weerawansa was absent from court in the contempt matter citing illness.
