Wheat Flour Price Hiked, Sri Lankan Bakeries Brace for Cost Increases

Major wheat flour suppliers Prima and Serendib have increased prices starting August 29th, with the cost per kilogram rising by Rs. 15 to Rs. 20, depending on the variety and supplier. This adjustment is attributed to rising global wheat prices, increased shipping, and insurance costs, exacerbated by the ongoing global war situation. Importers had previously met with Minister Wasantha Senanayake to discuss cost pressures, and Deputy Minister R.M. Jayawardena indicated government negotiations helped mitigate a steeper price hike. Consequently, prices for various bakery products, including bread, buns, and short eats like paratha and koththu, are expected to rise.
