Welipenna Interchange Reopens After Flooding Closes Sections for Light Vehicles

TLDR
  • Welipenna Interchange reopened after flooding.

  • Heavy rain caused temporary closure for light vehicles.

  • Southern Expressway traffic now normal.

The Welipenna Interchange on the Southern Expressway has reopened for vehicular traffic after being temporarily closed due to flooding. Heavy rainfall on May 13th caused the Aluthgama–Matugama road section at the interchange to submerge, leading to the closure of entry and exit points towards Colombo and the exit towards Galle, specifically for light vehicles. However, heavy vehicles heading towards Colombo and all vehicles travelling towards Matara were able to use the interchange as usual. Authorities have confirmed the route is now fully operational following the receding of floodwaters.
