Viral Meningitis Spreading Among Sri Lankan Schoolchildren; Officials Urge Calm

Viral meningitis cases are being reported among schoolchildren in several areas across Sri Lanka, prompting health authorities to urge the public not to panic. Chief Health Epidemiologist Dr. Palitha Karunapema stated that while the illness, first detected in Deniyaya, has now spread to locations including Diyatalawa, Welimada, and Rikillagaskada, there is no need for undue fear. Specific figures indicate 28 cases in Diyatalawa, 13 in Welimada, and 25 in Rikillagaskada. The Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation and advises adherence to health and safety guidelines to control the spread of the viral illness.
