US Sanctions & Hormuz Blockade Drive Iranian Tankers to Sri Lankan Coast

Nearly 20 Iranian oil tankers have anchored near Sri Lanka's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), reportedly seeking refuge. The vessels are allegedly unable to reach Iranian ports due to a US military blockade at the Strait of Hormuz and fear of potential attacks. Some of these tankers, described as part of Iran's "Dark Fleet," are under US sanctions for suspected violations of international oil transport rules. Sri Lanka's government is monitoring the situation but has stated it bears no responsibility as the ships are outside its sovereign territory. However, local institutions servicing these tankers face a significant risk of US sanctions.
