President Outlines Measures as Officials Confirm Sufficient Urea for Yala Season, But Expert Warns of Overall Shortage and Maha Season Concerns

TLDR
  • Dhammika Ranatunga confirms sufficient urea for Yala season paddy.

  • 50kg urea priced Rs. 9,900-Rs. 10,200; Rs. 50,000 subsidy per two hectares.

  • Agrarian Service Centers distribute paddy fertilizer daily, combating hoarding.

  • Expert warns Yala adequate, but Maha season faces severe urea shortage.

Sri Lanka is experiencing a significant urea fertilizer shortage ahead of the Yala season, primarily due to Middle East regional instability causing disruptions in imports and attempts at hoarding. With just over 100,000 tonnes of urea available by early March, barely sufficient for paddy cultivation, the Agrarian Development Department has decided to release existing stocks exclusively for paddy. Distribution will occur through government Agrarian Service Centers, with quantities allocated based on cultivated land. To ensure timely access, Commissioner General Dhammika Ranatunga announced that these centers will operate on holidays and weekends in areas where paddy cultivation has commenced, aiming to mitigate threats to paddy yields and national food security.

He highlighted that while 988,000 metric tons of urea are required for 450,000 hectares of paddy cultivation, only 102,000 metric tons are currently in reserve. Professor Marambe warned that the urea shortage could become a significant issue for the upcoming Maha season. He added that although mud and Bandi fertilizers are adequate for the current Yala season, they might also pose a problem for the Maha season.
