UNP Marks 80th Anniversary, Leader Warns of Threats to Sovereignty

The United National Party (UNP) celebrated its 80th anniversary on September 6th with commemorative events held at its headquarters, Sirikotha, in Pitakotte. The celebrations were presided over by UNP Leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who addressed the party's future direction. Founded on September 6, 1946, by D.S. Senanayake and other political leaders, the UNP marked this milestone by honoring its founders and outlining plans for a "modern United National Party" with new policies. Wickremesinghe also issued a warning, stating that the sovereignty of the people and Sri Lanka’s democratic system are under threat. Representatives from several other political parties, including the SJB, SLFP, and SLPP, were also in attendance.
