This visit occurred while Mr. Wickremesinghe is recovering from recent heart surgery. The United National Party (UNP), through its Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, strongly condemned the action, citing concerns over the former President's delicate health and the reported unwellness of Professor Wickremesinghe. Abeywardena stated that external visitors could pose a health risk during their recovery period. The UNP also suggested the visit might be a political maneuver aimed at diverting public attention.
