UN General Assembly Votes to Adopt New World Map Reflecting Africa's True Size

The United Nations General Assembly has voted to adopt a new world map designed to more accurately reflect the true size of Africa. The resolution, titled "Correct the Map" and sponsored by Togo with backing from African Union members, passed with 164 nations voting in favour. The United States was the sole country to vote against the proposal, while six nations abstained. Although the vote is non-binding, it signals a shift away from the widely used 16th-century Mercator projection, which has long been criticized for distorting the relative sizes of continents. This decision is expected to influence map usage across various global institutions.
