Sri Lanka has recorded two separate fatal encounters with wild elephants in recent days. In the Vellawali police area, a 55-year-old woman was killed by a wild elephant after she stepped outside her home. Separately, in the Tirukkovil area, a 63-year-old man was fatally attacked by a wild elephant while cutting grass for his cattle near the Vammadi Kulam tank. Both incidents are currently under investigation by the respective police divisions.

A 63-year-old man, Kandaiya Pillai Ganeshan, was killed in a wild elephant attack in the Vattamaddu area of Thirukkovil, Ampara district. The incident occurred on the night of May 23rd, 2026, while the victim was cutting grass for his cattle. His body has been placed at the Thirukkovil Hospital mortuary.
