Island-wide Crackdown: 31 Arrested, Over 52,000 Litres of Illegally Hoarded Fuel Seized

Two individuals were arrested on April 2 in the Mollipothana area of Thambalagamuwa for illegally possessing a large quantity of diesel. Acting on tip-offs, Thambalagamuwa Police conducted raids at two separate locations, recovering a total of 2,045 litres of diesel held without proper authorization. The suspects, aged 41 and 61, are identified as residents of Trincomalee and Thambalagamuwa. Further investigations into the incident are currently underway.

In a new development on April 6, Navagamuwa Police arrested a fuel bowser driver for allegedly stealing fuel worth approximately Rs. 50,000. The driver was apprehended with 60 litres of diesel, 42 litres of petrol, and 40 litres of kerosene, along with equipment used for siphoning and the fuel bowser itself. The stolen fuel was being transported from the Petroleum Corporation to the Kalawana Lanka IOC fuel station, and a complaint was filed by a senior investigation officer from the Petroleum Corporation.

In new developments on April 6, one individual was arrested in Ududumbara for illegally possessing 30 litres of petrol. The arrest, which involved a 47-year-old woman from Medamahanuwara, took place at Wetalawa Junction following a police tip-off.
