The trial against former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody commenced today at the Colombo High Court. He faces corruption charges filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The allegations involve causing a loss of Rs. 8.8 million to the government by manipulating procurement procedures in 2016 to favour a private company for a carpet-laying contract at the Lanka Fertilizer Company warehouse. During the hearing before High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela, the charges were read out, and Jayakody pleaded not guilty. The trial has now begun.
