A mobile drug screening conducted on Tuesday, the 23rd, at the Navinna bus stand in Maharagama revealed that thirteen bus drivers and conductors tested positive for drug use. The operation, which screened 200 individuals from both the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority services, was organized by the National Transport Medical Institute. This initiative falls under the National Programme for Ensuring Safe and Efficient Public Transport, led by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. Separately, the National Transport Medical Institute reported that since November last year, 239 drivers and conductors in the Western Province have tested positive for prohibited drugs out of 5,242 screened in ongoing mobile tests, with legal action being pursued against offenders due to the link between drug use and road accidents.
