Suspect Arrested with Major Explosives Cache at Southern Expressway Entry

Police apprehended a 57-year-old resident of Mulkirigala on April 24, 2026, near the Kasagala entrance of the Southern Expressway in Weeraketiya. The arrest occurred during an inspection of a cab, where a substantial quantity of explosives was discovered cleverly concealed in the vehicle's rear. Seized items include 14 kilograms of gunpowder, 240 gelatin sticks, 350 kilograms of ammonia, 490 detonators, and 5,600 feet of gunpowder wire. Investigations by Weeraketiya and Tangalle Police currently indicate the explosives were being transported for use in stone quarrying. Further inquiries are underway.
