Peliyagoda Police have arrested a suspect on suspicion of removing bolts from the railway track at the site of a train derailment that occurred near Wanawasala and Kelaniya stations on the 16th. Authorities report the individual is a severe drug addict and preliminary investigations suggest he transported the removed bolts to another location. Police are actively searching for another suspect connected to the incident. The Railway Department has also initiated an investigation, appointing a two-engineer team to probe the derailment of Train No. 507, which saw three carriages leave the tracks.

The two suspects arrested in connection with the railway track tampering near Wanawasala, identified as Rajapaksha Pathiranalage Gihan Kanishka (25) and Subramaniyam Ramesh Kumar (31), have been remanded until May 29th. They were produced before Colombo Magistrate's Court No. 05 (Hulftsdorp). The primary suspect, accused of removing lock bars and plates (described as iron bars from the points system) from the railway track, was arrested on May 16th. The Railway Department Traffic Superintendent, Asanka Samarasinghe, stated that the accident was caused by the removal of these components. Peliyagoda Police made the arrests.

The suspect arrested for tampering with railway tracks near Wanawasala, along with the individual who purchased the removed metal parts, have both been remanded until May 29th. Investigations revealed the primary suspect is severely addicted to drugs. The derailment resulted in 12 people sustaining minor injuries, with one carriage overturning. The arrests were made by Peliyagoda Police.

Following the arrest of a suspect in connection with the railway track tampering near Wanawasala, the individual who purchased the removed metal parts has also been apprehended. Deputy Inspector General of Police Kalinga Jayasinghe confirmed that information obtained from the initial suspect led to the buyer's arrest. Both the suspect who removed the parts and the buyer are scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today.
