Supreme Court Rules Rights Violated in Easter Sunday Probe Investigations

TLDR
  • SC ruled rights of Shani Abeysekara and Ravi Seneviratne violated.

  • Former IGP Tennakoon and two others found responsible.

  • Violations occurred during Easter Sunday attack probe.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ruled that the fundamental rights of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) DIG Shani Abeysekara and Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne were violated. The court determined that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon and two others were responsible for these violations during investigations concerning the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks. The petitions filed by Abeysekara and Seneviratne sought to prevent their alleged unlawful arrest and remand. The Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, heard the petitions and subsequently delivered its verdict.
