Supreme Court Reserves Decision on Anti-Corruption Bill's Constitutionality

The Supreme Court has concluded its hearings on petitions challenging the constitutionality of the government's proposed Anti-Corruption Amendment Bill. Presided over by a three-judge bench, the proceedings heard arguments from petitioners, including former Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, who contended the bill infringes upon fundamental rights and public sovereignty. Petitioners also argued for a referendum and special parliamentary majority for its passage. The court announced that its confidential conclusion on the bill's constitutionality will be communicated to the Speaker of Parliament and the President.
