Strong El Niño Forecast: Global Disaster Risk and Extreme Weather Loom

Meteorologists are forecasting the development of a strong El Niño event by the end of the year, with some projections indicating a significant probability of its peak between November 2026 and January 2027. This phenomenon, driven by warming Pacific Ocean waters, carries the potential for global-scale disasters, reminiscent of the devastating 1877-1878 El Niño which led to widespread famine and over 50 million deaths. Current global warming trends are believed to potentially exacerbate the intensity of this impending event. For Sri Lanka, the Meteorological Department warns of drastic weather shifts, including the possibility of above-average rainfall in some regions and severe drought conditions in others. While the current El Niño is classified as weak and growing to moderate, there remains a notable chance it could develop into a very strong event.
