State Patronage Discussed for 2026 'Walk for Peace' in Sri Lanka

A discussion concerning state patronage for the upcoming “Walk for Peace Programme in Sri Lanka” was held yesterday, February 2, at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Venerable Dr. Melpitiye Wimalakitthi Thero and attended by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake. This seven-day pilgrimage, inspired by a 110-day peace walk across 10 US states, is scheduled to commence on April 21, 2026. It will involve twelve monks led by Most Venerable Paññakāra Thero, aiming to promote peace and lovingkindness across the island, guided by Buddhist teachings.

The 'Walk for Peace' program, described as internationally recognized, is scheduled to span seven days across the island starting April 21st. Its purpose and concept are guided by the Buddha’s teaching, “Caratha bhikkhave carikam bahujana hitaya bahujana sukhaya lokanukampaya” (Wander forth, O Monks, for the welfare and happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world). This information was released by the President’s Media Division.

The 'Walk for Peace Program in Sri Lanka' is scheduled to commence on April 21st. Sirasa Media Network will provide media patronage and coordination for the program, while the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat will contribute to the meals and alms for the participating monks.
