SriLankan Airlines Loses Over 8 Crore Rupees in UAE Cyber Fraud

SriLankan Airlines has confirmed a significant financial fraud resulting in the loss of approximately 8 crore rupees (AED 974,000). The incident occurred when hackers gained unauthorized access to the email account of a service provider in Dubai, UAE, and fraudulently diverted the payment. The airline acknowledged the non-receipt of funds by the supplier and stated that preliminary investigations point to a third-party compromise of the email system. This cyber breach is in addition to reports of a separate financial misuse incident at the airline's office in Chennai, India. Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation, and Energy, Aruna Karunathilaka, has confirmed the event, and SriLankan Airlines has indicated that necessary steps will be taken to address the losses.
