Sri Lanka's Vehicle Import Bill Reaches US$ 613 Million in First Quarter 2026

TLDR
  • US$ 613 million spent on vehicle imports in Q1 2026.

  • Annual spending may reach US$ 2.4 billion, up from US$ 2 billion in 2025.

  • Import curbs lifted, driving widening trade deficit.

  • Governor Dr. Weerasinghe flags economic risks.

Sri Lanka spent US$ 613 million on vehicle imports during the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This figure includes US$ 195 million allocated in March alone for both personal and commercial vehicles. The expenditure represents a significant increase compared to the US$ 61 million spent in the first quarter of 2025. Last year, total vehicle imports amounted to US$ 2.047 billion, exceeding earlier projections. Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe indicated that 2026 spending might also surpass initial forecasts, with the higher import volume contributing to increased Treasury revenue from taxes and duties.

Sri Lanka has spent nearly USD 600 million on vehicle imports in the first quarter of 2026, according to Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe. This figure raises concerns that the annual expenditure could reach USD 2.4 billion by year-end if the current trend continues, surpassing last year's USD 2 billion. The increase in imports is attributed to the removal of vehicle import restrictions, which has contributed to a widening trade deficit. The Central Bank also highlighted potential economic challenges in 2026 stemming from the Middle East conflict and climate change.
