The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) of Sri Lanka has reported a robust start to 2026, collecting Rs. 606,002 million (over Rs. 606 billion) in tax revenue during the first quarter. This figure, covering the period from January 1 to March 31, 2026, represents a 17.7% increase compared to the same quarter in 2025. The department announced on April 10 that this collection successfully met 25% of the total annual tax target for 2026. Growth was observed across all major tax categories, including Income Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), and the Social Security Contribution Levy (SSCL). This performance continues the positive momentum from 2025, which saw the highest annual tax revenue in the country's history, driven partly by economic expansion and ongoing tax policy reforms.
