Government and government-approved schools across Sri Lanka concluded the second phase of their first term today, April 10, 2026. This marks the start of a holiday period in observance of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The Ministry of Education announced that schools will remain closed until April 19. Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday, April 20, 2026. For Sinhala and Tamil medium schools, this will mark the commencement of the second school term, while Muslim schools will begin the fourth phase of their first term.

The Ministry of Education has further clarified that the first school term for government and government-approved private Sinhala and Tamil schools, along with the third phase of the first school term for Muslim schools, concluded on April 10. Additionally, the distribution of activity books for Grade 1 students, relevant to the second and third terms of 2026, has commenced and is projected to be completed for all schools by April 30.
