Sri Lankan Rupee Depreciation Fuels Concerns Over Rising Prices

Economists are warning that the continued depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee against the US Dollar could lead to significant price increases for consumers. Fuel, electricity, water tariffs, and essential goods are expected to become more expensive as the rupee weakens. Analyst Dhananath Fernando attributes the current pressure on the rupee to the Central Bank purchasing dollars and excess rupee liquidity in the financial system, which drives up demand for the US dollar. Furthermore, reduced foreign exchange inflows from tourism and impacts on exports due to global geopolitical factors are exacerbating the situation. This scenario poses a substantial risk of inflation, particularly as many vital imports are denominated in dollars.
