Sri Lankan Rupee Depreciates Against US Dollar, Selling Rate Crosses Rs. 319 Mark

TLDR
  • Sri Lankan Rupee depreciated 1.8% against US Dollar in 2026.

  • US Dollar selling rate surpassed Rs. 319 for the first time since July 2023.

  • Depreciation attributed to external sector pressures and Middle East conflict.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has confirmed that the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) has depreciated by 1.8% against the US Dollar (USD) in 2026. Recent data indicates the US Dollar's selling rate has surpassed the Rs. 319 mark, reaching approximately Rs. 319.26 to Rs. 319.31, while the buying rate stands around Rs. 311.76 to Rs. 311.79. This marks the first time the selling rate has exceeded Rs. 319 since July 2023, and the buying rate has gone above Rs. 311 since June 2023. The CBSL attributes this depreciation to external sector pressures, particularly following the commencement of the Middle East conflict in late February 2026. While minor daily fluctuations have been observed, the overall trend points to a weakening of the Rupee.
