Compensation for families of Sri Lankan migrant workers who pass away overseas has been significantly increased to Rs. 2 million. This revised amount, effective for deaths occurring after June 26 last year, replaces the previous compensation of Rs. 600,000. The new total comprises the existing Rs. 600,000 insurance payout plus an additional Rs. 1.4 million from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment's (SLBFE) Migrant Workers’ Welfare Fund. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, described the move as a major relief. As the first step under the new scheme, Rs. 70 million was distributed to the families of 50 deceased migrant workers on Thursday (10).

The death compensation for registered Sri Lankan migrant workers who die overseas has been increased to Rs. 2 million. This total comprises Rs. 0.6 million from the existing insurance scheme and an additional Rs. 1.4 million from the Migrant Workers’ Welfare Fund. The initiative is being implemented by the SLBFE on the instructions of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, under the supervision of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra. In the first phase, held on September 10, 2026, Rs. 70 million in additional compensation was awarded to the families of 50 deceased migrant workers.
