Compensation for families of Sri Lankan migrant workers who pass away overseas has been significantly increased to Rs. 2 million. This revised amount, effective for deaths occurring after June 26 last year, replaces the previous compensation of Rs. 600,000. The new total comprises the existing Rs. 600,000 insurance payout plus an additional Rs. 1.4 million from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment's (SLBFE) Migrant Workers’ Welfare Fund. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, described the move as a major relief. As the first step under the new scheme, Rs. 70 million was distributed to the families of 50 deceased migrant workers on Thursday (10).
