Sri Lankan Doctors Perform World-First Surgery Separating Conjoined Twins with Kidney Transplant

A team of Sri Lankan doctors has achieved a world-first by successfully separating conjoined twin girls joined at the pelvis. The highly complex, 14-hour surgery was conducted by medical professionals from Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialized Children's Hospital, and the University of Peradeniya's Faculty of Medicine. A crucial element of the procedure involved transplanting one of the twins' shared kidneys to the other, a feat previously unaccomplished globally. This landmark operation, performed on twins born in 2021, marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's medical history.
