Sri Lanka will officially commence the implementation of digital motor insurance cards from May 1, 2026, replacing traditional printed documents. This change was decided jointly by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), the Sri Lanka Insurance Association, and other stakeholders in the insurance sector. Motorists will now be able to obtain proof of insurance through a digital card, a mobile app, or a printed copy issued only upon request. This initiative is part of a future plan to digitize all insurance-related documents, as stated by Dinusha Thilanka, Chairman of the General Insurance Forum of the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka. The Inspector General of Police has informed all police stations about the new system.
