The Excise Department has announced a nationwide suspension of liquor sales for the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year. All licensed establishments, including liquor shops, taverns, hotels, restaurants, and karaoke bars, are mandated to remain closed on April 13 and 14. Excise Commissioner General M.B.N.A. Pemarathna confirmed this directive, which has government approval. Deputy Excise Commissioner Roshan Perera also emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against any license holders found violating these regulations by selling alcohol during the holiday period. The public is urged to report any illegal liquor or tobacco offenses by calling the department's hotline, 1913.
