Sri Lanka Ranks 67th Globally in Peace Index, Second Most Peaceful in South Asia

Sri Lanka has achieved a significant improvement in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), climbing to 67th place globally out of 163 countries. This positions the nation as the second most peaceful in South Asia, trailing only Bhutan, which ranks 16th worldwide. The report, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, notes Sri Lanka's substantial progress, marking a rise from its previous 97th position and achieving the largest percentage improvement in the region by 2.3 percent. Political analysts attribute this upward trend to the country's increasing political and economic stability, and enhanced security. This progress stands in contrast to the broader South Asian region, which experienced the worst overall deterioration in peacefulness according to the same index.
