Sri Lanka Parliament Extends State of Emergency with Majority Vote

The Sri Lankan Parliament today, April 9, approved the extension of the state of emergency under the Public Security Ordinance. The resolution passed with a significant majority of 110 votes. The vote saw 137 members in favor and 27 against. Several political parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Tamil National Alliance, New Democratic Front, and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, along with independent MP Archuna Ramanadan, voted against the extension. The parliamentary vote was conducted following a request made by Tamil National Alliance MP Shanakkiyan Rasamanickam.
