Sri Lanka Opens Spill Gates at Multiple Reservoirs Amidst Adverse Weather

TLDR
  • Multiple Sri Lankan reservoirs opened spill gates due to heavy rains.

  • Rajanganaya, Deduru Oya, Lunugamvehera among those affected.

  • Action taken to manage rising water levels and ensure safety.

Sri Lanka's Irrigation Department has opened spill gates at several major reservoirs, including Rajanganaya, Deduru Oya, Lunugamvehera, and Angamuwa, due to prevailing adverse weather conditions and rapidly rising water levels. The Rajanganaya Reservoir saw 12 spill gates opened, with some raised up to six feet, releasing significant water flow, reportedly influenced by upstream rainfall and the opening of Kala Wewa gates. At Deduru Oya, two gates were reopened to a height of one foot, releasing approximately 1,400 cubic feet per second. Lunugamvehera Reservoir also opened six gates, releasing 2,915 cubic feet per second, while Angamuwa Reservoir opened two gates releasing 643 cubic feet per second. These measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the reservoirs and manage water discharge effectively.
