Sri Lanka Distributes Yala Season Fertilizer Subsidies Amidst Supply Concerns

TLDR
  • Yala fertilizer subsidy: Rs. 30,000/hectare distributed.

  • Officials deny fertilizer shortage, overpayment claims.

  • Fertilizer bags fixed at Rs. 9,900; tea owners get free subsidy.

  • Govt buys potatoes at Rs. 220/kg; Namal Karunaratne confirms.

Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne announced that the fertilizer subsidy for two hectares of rice cultivation has been increased from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 60,000. Additionally, the subsidy for additional crops grown on rice lands is being raised from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 36,000 (per two hectares). The increase is intended to address the rising costs of production due to the global geopolitical tensions and fuel price hikes. However, the Deputy Minister also cautioned that fertilizer prices may rise in the future due to the higher costs of importing new stocks.
