Sri Lanka Implements 10% Electricity Tariff Increase from April 1st

Sri Lanka has implemented an approximate 10% increase in electricity tariffs, effective from April 1, 2024. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved this revision, which was requested by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for the second quarter of this year, despite the CEB initially seeking a 13.56% increase. For domestic consumers, tariffs for 0-30 units will rise by 4.3% (a monthly increase of Rs. 15), while the 31-60 units category sees a 6.9% increase (amounting to Rs. 45 monthly), and the 61-90 units category also faces a 6.9% hike. State institutions will experience a 14.4% increase, with industries and hotels also facing revised rates. Religious places consuming under 180 units are exempt from the increase, though those above 180 units will see a 9.6% hike, and the fixed charge remains unchanged.
