Sri Lanka Gazettes New Bill to Replace Prevention of Terrorism Act

The Sri Lankan government has gazetted a new bill titled the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, intended to repeal and replace the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979. This proposed legislation aims to strengthen the legal framework for addressing terrorism-related offences, including provisions for investigations, detentions, and prosecutions. The bill seeks to protect the nation's security and its people from terrorist acts committed both within and outside the country, while also preventing Sri Lankan territory from being used for terrorist preparations. It reportedly includes measures to uphold international human rights standards and fundamental rights.
