Sri Lanka Coasts Brace for Rough Seas and Strong Winds

TLDR
  • Avoid sailing Kankesanthurei-Mannar; very rough seas, 60-70 km/h winds.

  • Strong winds 40-50 km/h affect Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern provinces.

  • Land impacts: roof damage, trees, power lines, coastal inundation possible.

  • Other seas 50-60 km/h; fishermen urged caution island-wide.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning predicting rough seas and strong winds along Sri Lanka's coastal areas for the next 24 to 72 hours. Specific sea regions, including those from Kankesanturai to Chilaw via Mannar and Matara to Potuvil via Hambantota, are expected to experience very rough conditions with wind speeds potentially reaching 55-65 km/h. Other coastal areas may see winds up to 50 km/h, while the seas from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle could experience winds up to 50-60 km/h at times. Intermittent rain or thundershowers are forecast for coastal areas from Puttalam to Hambantota, and in the evenings/nights for other coastal regions. The department has advised the navy and fishing communities to remain highly vigilant due to the potential for rough seas and waves reaching coastal areas.
