Sri Lanka Braces for Heavy Rainfall, Potential Low-Pressure System

Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres in multiple provinces, including Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, North Central, and Eastern areas. Showers or thundershowers are expected at times across these regions, with specific districts like Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya also anticipating significant downpours. The department noted that an atmospheric disturbance over the island may develop into a low-pressure area by tomorrow, suggesting rainy conditions are likely to persist for several days. Additionally, strong winds of up to 50 kmph are forecast for certain areas, particularly over the western slopes of the central hills. The public is advised to take adequate precautions against potential damage from temporary, localised strong winds and lightning.
