Reports indicate a plan to purchase 20,000 metric tons of urea for the 2026/2027 Maha season, intended for direct use and mixed fertilizer production by the State Fertilizer Company Limited. Additionally, cabinet approval has been given for the purchase of 15,000 metric tons of urea for the 2026 Yala season, to be acquired through farmer service committees. These procurements aim to prevent fertilizer shortages for farmers.

The Cabinet has approved the procurement of an additional 15,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer for the 2026 Yala season, to be distributed through Agrarian Services Committees. This follows an earlier Cabinet decision on April 6, 2026, to provide farmers with a 50kg bag of urea at a fixed price of Rs. 10,200/-. The total estimated urea requirement for the 2026 Yala season is approximately 75,000 metric tons, with 48,297.87 metric tons already purchased and distributed from existing national reserves. The estimated cultivated land for the 2026 Yala season has been revised to 450,000 - 500,000 hectares, down from an initial estimate of 550,000 hectares.
