Sri Lanka Activates First 10 MW Battery Storage System Amidst Renewable Energy Push

Sri Lanka has activated its first 10 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a milestone in the nation's energy transition, connected via the Galle Grid Substation. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the national grid and reduce electricity costs as the country aims for 70% renewable energy by 2030. The government is actively pursuing larger projects, including an international tender for a 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS and plans for a 1,200 MW system within two years, alongside adding 2,700 MW from renewables by 2029. To support this expansion, concessions on battery imports for larger systems are being developed, though quality standards are still under consideration.
