Special Wednesday Holiday for Public Sector Cancelled from April 8

The cancellation of the special weekly Wednesday holiday for the public sector, effective from April 8, was decided to ensure the efficient and uninterrupted functioning of essential services across the country. The original Wednesday holiday had been granted under Public Administration Circular No. 09/2026.

The cancellation of the special weekly Wednesday holiday for the public sector, effective from April 8, has been confirmed by Prabath Chandrakirthi, the Commissioner General of Essential Services. The cancellation applies to government offices, schools, universities, and judicial services, all of which will operate as usual from next Wednesday. An official circular regarding this decision is expected to be issued shortly. The original Wednesday holiday, implemented to conserve fuel, was declared effective from March 18, 2026, following a circular issued on March 17 by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
