The Southwest Monsoon has begun establishing over Sri Lanka, bringing showers and strong winds to various parts of the country. The Department of Meteorology forecasts showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, along with the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is expected in several areas, with some locations potentially receiving over 100 mm, and even above 200 mm in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. Showers are also anticipated in the Northern Province and Uva province, with strong winds possible over the western slopes of the central hills.

Rainfall is expected to increase from this evening (June 2nd) across southwestern parts of Sri Lanka, including the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Galle, and Matara districts. Fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely in some areas today (June 2nd). Fairly strong winds of 30-40 kmph are also anticipated at times over the western slopes.

The forecast for fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph has been extended to include the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, and the Trincomalee District. Showers and thundershowers are also anticipated for Saturday, May 30th.

The forecast for heavy rainfall, with falls of about or exceeding 100 mm, is now expected to continue for May 26th, 27th, and 28th across the affected southwestern parts of the island. Additionally, fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph are anticipated.
