New details reveal the collision occurred in front of the second entrance gate of Hambantota International Port between an SLTB bus and a backhoe/loader machine. Three people were injured, including the bus conductor and two passengers, and admitted to Hambantota General Hospital. The bus, from the Ambalantota depot, was traveling from Hambantota to Colombo and sustained severe damage. Investigations by the Port Police indicate the loader machine entered the port in the wrong direction, contributing to the accident. Both the bus driver and the loader machine driver have been arrested by the Port Police.
