Six Sri Lankan Fishermen Released After Eight Months in Bangladeshi Custody

Six Sri Lankan fishermen, who were held in Bangladeshi custody for eight months, have been released and are scheduled to return to Sri Lanka on April 2. The group, aged between 23 and 58, had set sail on the multi-day fishing vessel 'Sudu Duwa 4' on July 16 and were subsequently apprehended by the Bangladesh Navy on charges of violating maritime boundaries. They were detained at the Chittagong Central Jail while legal proceedings were conducted. The release followed diplomatic intervention prompted by appeals from their families, who faced significant hardship during their imprisonment. The Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Bangladesh were involved in securing their release.
