Provincial Council Election Timing Sparks Debate Amidst Government Assurances and Opposition Doubts

Sri Lankan government ministers have indicated the Provincial Council election will be held this year or as soon as possible following parliamentary legislative completion. Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Krishantha Abeysinghe affirmed the election would occur within the current year, while Chief Government Whip Dr. Nalin Jayatissa stated it would follow legislative processes. However, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva expressed doubt, stating the election will not happen this year and might be delayed until next year, citing the diversion of funds. A recent report also revealed that Rs. 9,000 million allocated for 2025 Provincial Council elections was returned to the national budget, indicating the polls did not take place as planned. A special parliamentary committee is currently reviewing the electoral system, with its recommendations anticipated shortly.
