The demonstration, held in Pelawatta, Akuregoda, was organized by activists from the Nava Janatha Peramuna (also referred to as the New Democratic Front), led by Sugeeshwara Bandara, who is identified as former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Private Secretary. They were protesting the alleged US$ 2.5 million cyber fraud from the General Treasury, demanding the resignation of Finance Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma. During the afternoon protest, in addition to cow dung, stones were also reportedly hurled at Sugeeshwara Bandara and other protesters, leading to a tense situation that required police intervention to restore order.
