Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya launched the nationwide 'Praja Shakthi - 1000 Villages, 1000 Works' project on June 2, 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen the economy and food security, and eradicate poverty by identifying local economic patterns for village development. The project is set to be implemented simultaneously in 1000 Grama Niladhari divisions across all 341 Divisional Secretariat divisions. The Prime Minister stated the project showcases democratic features of a people-centric government and seeks to involve communities in national development through rural upliftment. The main launch event was held in Kasbewa, with the Prime Minister also attending the Colombo District program in Piliyandala.
