The National Ceremony for Sinhala and Tamil New Year rituals took place on April 14, 2026, in the Gampaha district. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya presided over the event, which was organized by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. The auspicious rituals were symbolically performed at Mr. Darshana Weerasinghe's residence on Jayantha Road in Gampaha. During the auspicious period, Prime Minister Amarasuriya also visited the Sri Sunandarama Viharaya in Medagama, Gampaha, for religious observances and to receive blessings. Notable attendees included Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Professor Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Deputy Minister of Labor Mahinda Jayasinghe, and several other state officials and artists.

New reports specify that the Sinhala and Tamil New Year cultural festival in Gampaha, where Prime Minister Amarasuriya participated in rituals, was held on Tuesday, April 14th. Additionally, Venerable Thunmodara Samitha Thero, who blessed the Prime Minister at the Medagama Sri Sunandarama Viharaya, is identified as a member of the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya's New Year observances have expanded to include Hindu religious rituals. These rituals were held at the Sri Sivasubhramaniya Swami Devasthanam temple in Wattala, Hekitta. Minister of Labor and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Mr. Anil Jayanta, also participated in these observances.

New reports indicate that some of the New Year cultural festival rituals were also performed at the home of Mr. Darshana Weerasinghe in Gampaha. Additionally, during the auspicious time, Prime Minister Amarasuriya initiated children into learning as part of the traditional customs and rituals.
