President Warns of Drug Inflow Exceeding Seizures, Declares Political Protection for Traffickers Broken

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has declared that political protection for drug traffickers in Sri Lanka has been dismantled for the first time, while warning that the actual scale of drug inflow may significantly exceed official seizure figures. Speaking at a meeting of the "A Nation United" national operation committee, the President highlighted the seizure of 1,947 kilograms of heroin, 2,062 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine ("Ice"), and 289 kilograms of cocaine during recent anti-narcotics efforts. He instructed officials to expedite legal reforms and other necessary measures to eradicate the drug menace, emphasizing the need to prevent seized narcotics from re-entering society and to speed up the prosecution of offenders. The President also noted significant progress in the six-month operation and expressed confidence that law enforcement agencies would operate without interference.
